Wandering in the Waste

Book 2 in the Plimgar to Luminar series is just beginning. It would be great to include any requests and suggestions from readers into the mix. The focus has shifted away from Plimgar to the new settlers in the Northern Waste and the continuing journey the characters are on. If you have a favourite character, or a suggestion for a new character, I’d love to hear from you. So far I’m 6,000 words into the book so anything can happen from here on! Samuel’s Quest is just under 60,000 words and I anticipate Wandering in the Waste will be a similar length.

Matt & Claire Reid

The Reids are fifth generation Plimgarians. Claire’s family are from the Eastern Reach originally. Matt has traveled with his carpentry and building work to most of the nearby villages, just as his father did before him. With six children, the Reids live a very full life with a lot of laughter.

The whole Reid family are important to both the Thilwiggans in many ways. Socially, emotionally and spiritually they support both Samuel and Rachael. Not related closely to one another, they still fill the role of extended family.

Cap (The Tiglathian Commander)

The Commander keeps his men and his people in line through fear. He is a dictator with absolute confidence that people will do as he says, and no compunctions about brutally enforcing his authority if there is even a hint it may not be accepted. He does not accept or acknowledge personal freedom.
Cap has been visiting the Outlands for years. He found the first tunnel out near Garforth Village about 25 years previously. Progressively more tunnels opened into different parts of the Outlands, but the Plimgar Tunnel was the first one that opened into an area that provided sufficient cover for a significant number of men to establish a base and remain hidden.
Cap had been aware that something momentous was happening on the night of the storm. Although a Plimgar Tunnel had been open for some time, the sudden opening of a new and much larger tunnel in a hidden part of the Wood gave him the opportunity to act on his plans and bring his men to the surface quickly.

Gabry is second in command of the Tiglathians. He is skilled at self-protection and deception. Nothing happens among the Tiglathians that Gabry doesn’t know about. Whatever happens, Gabry finds a way to come out on top, or slip out of the noose. Having no loyalty to anyone but himself he expects the same of others and trusts no-one, including himself. Gabry is a coward and a thief. He has no sense of responsibility or obligation to others. Motivated by self-interest, he works only on those things that he perceives will benefit him.

Balph is Tiglathian, a hard man with few friends, tough on even those close to him. He operates on the rules of Tiglath: fight for what you want; the strongest man wins; get them before they get you…

Balph has never thought deeply about life and its meaning, or anything else for that matter. He has never questioned the leadership of his commander, or the way things are done by the Tiglathians. Balph is in for some surprises.

Karl

Karl is Rick Baynes’ nephew, the son of his sister and a Tiglathian. Born in Tiglath, but curious about the outlands, Karl is basically a happy-go-lucky young man, with perhaps more confidence than is good for him. The dark influences of Tiglath have been tempered by the stories his mother told him of her home in Junction VIllage, and the hope of life in the light of the outlands.

Rick is suspicious and defensive. He and his wife Hetty moved from Garforth VIllage to Plimgar VIllage 25 years ago, following the disappearance of his sister. This makes him a relative newcomer, and he is not familiar with, or fond of, the wood. Rick believes that the people of Plimgar do not accept him, especially since he and Hetty have no children. The lack of children is a great source of disappointment to both of them, which they carefully avoid talking about.

Isaiah Reid

Isaiah is 18 and Samuel Thilwiggan’s best friend. He is conscientious and responsible, friendly and considerate. He has a tendency to be overly serious and sensitive at times, but is a solid and loyal friend. He is also very fond of Rachael, but not certain whether he sees her only as a friend, or something more. Isaiah is the second of 6 children and his father’s assistant in carpentry and house-building.

Silvrin Greyhouse (Whitestone)

Silvrin is a man who has always been on the outside of things. Brought up in Junction Village, he never felt that he really fitted in. When he left home at 15 he chose to settle on the northern edge of Plimgar Wood and hunt and fish for his food.

Silvrin first encountered the Tiglathians when 2 of them emerged from a cave he was about to explore. They offered him food in exchange for information about the villages around the wood. He met Faklen (another outlander) through these men. Faklen had been living in a cave, and had followed the men back to their underground home.

Silvrin’s hunger for acceptance pushes him to do things he would not, of his own volition, consider. He feels trapped by these choices and the ‘friendship’ he is offered.

At 16 Rachael knows many things about caring for Plimgar Wood and the creatures within it. She has courage and determination to face her fears rather than take the path of least resistance. She is strong and independent, but these things are not innate. Her strength and independence have been learned and developed through the challenges and trials she has faced. Her closest friend is her brother Samuel whom she has always depended on, especially since their parents’ deaths.

When Samuel leaves on his quest, placing her in sole-charge of caring for Plimgar Wood, Rachael does what she must, depending on her faith in the One to carry her and Plimgar through.
